How to Transform Content and Yourself into a Profitable Business: A Free Report

There are a great many ways to make money on the internet and all of them involve some selling of some sort. Be it a product or ad space on your websites.

Most bloggers generate income by providing great amounts of content daily for free and monetizing through ad sponsorships and programs like Google Adsense.

On the other hand, some internet marketers prefer to create an informational product and establish themselves as an expert, in order to generate sales.

Instead of continually creating content and publishing it for free, they market paid content/products while constantly getting new buyers or supporters through a robust affiliate program.

You can certainly continue to blog or write as usual, in the hope that the search traffic you attract will allow you to make some money through your on-site ads.

But consider this: What if you could make a lot more money doing what you already do (creating content), by simply having something to sell as well?

Brian Clark elaborates on this in his free report on making money online.

Teaching Sells: Making Money from Your Content and Personal Skills

Brian Clark from Copyblogger recently contacted me and asked if I would be interested in a joint venture deal for his latest project with Tony Clark, which is a paid training course on ways to generate some real online income.

He initially offered me a draft copy of his free report and I read it last weekend. The 24 page report is excellent and really offers some good information which explains how bloggers, writers and entrepreneurs of all types can really benefit from just having something to sell.

I’ve been a fan of Brian’s work for some time already so I thought I’ll just help to promote the site a little (hence the referral links). I do highly recommend that you get a copy of the 24 page report as it’ll give a more thorough introduction on how you can make money.

There is nothing to buy at the moment so you’ll only have to subscribe to the mailing list, which you can opt-out of anytime. As most of you would know, I only write about something on Dosh Dosh if I feel it benefits you as a reader.

And this is something that appears to have a lot of potential, especially because it helps you to look at your personal brand, current blogging career or business model in a new light.

I’m actually really looking forward to the program when it launches, which promises to teach you the following (and a lot more):
How to target a vast audience with a niche angle

How to have a unique, entertaining approach to content development

How to create content that sells itself (without long copy sales letters)

How to effectively leverage the audiences of others with win-win proposals

How to develop multi-format content with free and inexpensive tools

How to build airtight paid membership websites

How to choose the best business model for your topic and goals

How to increase profits with advanced training and a la carte sales

How to further leverage your skills as a highly paid consultant

How to Create Your Own Niche Blogging Masterplan for Long Term Profit

I’ve given a brief introduction to niche blogging and now I’m going to write a little about the process of actually creating a niche blogging masterplan you can follow for coordinated efficiency and overall success.

Reviewing my experience with niche blogs, I’ve realized that you need to have a clear personal goal as its easy to be sidetracked by factors that are not a priority at all.

Having a long-term perspective is essential as well, especially if you want to make these niche blogs a profitable source of revenue.
Creating your own Niche Blog Masterplan

There are basically two main options here: Quality or Quantity. While they aren’t mutually exclusive, these are essentially two divided routes, each with their own growth patterns, marketing techniques and monetization strategies.

Let’s split this up and take a closer look at each method.

Quantity or the Brute Force method

This means creating as many niche blogs as possible (till a manageable limit) and writing one post a day or every alternate day on each of them. Your profit strategy is simple: To create multiple blogs, hoping that each of them will pick up search traffic and hence ad clicks.

This method is commonly used by many Made-for-Adsense blogs or websites, which aggregate or scrap content from blog feeds or search engines like Google blog Search.

I’m not suggesting that you do the same thing because these types of blogs are not profitable, despite being fully automated.
Traffic source: Your main emphasis is on gaining regular search traffic through the gradual development of many long-tailed keywords.

Development plan: Create content on a regular basis to keep the blog fresh.

Monetization Goal: To get as many ad or affiliate link clicks as possible through targeted traffic (i.e. search engine visitors.)

Link building/Marketing strategy. Article or Press Release submissions to article directories for backlinks and possibly Pay per Click advertising if you are mainly monetizing through affiliate programs.

Benefits: Less pro-active work needed. Most of the time, you’ll just need to consistently develop content. Less emphasis is placed on actual networking and blog marketing.

Disadvantages: Difficult to manage and time-consuming unless you hire bloggers or writers to create content for these blogs on a long-term basis

Quality or the Flagship Method

This means creating one or two niche blogs at one time and spending time on building your brand and site reputation. The goal is to become an expert on the topic, which naturally draws in referral traffic and links as well.
Traffic source: The emphasis is on both search traffic and also defensible referral traffic through social networking sites, forums etc.

Development plan: To build a regular audience around the site. It is important to integrate your blog within a community and this involves socializing quite often with your fellow bloggers. A minimum of one post a day is optimal.

Monetization Goal: Common methods used includes Adsense and other affiliate programs. This is not much difference between this and from the brute force method, except that you’ll have more potential for direct ad sales as well.

Link building/Marketing strategy: More emphasis is placed on emailing pitches to other notable bloggers in your niche or developing the occasional linkbait for social websites.

Benefits: The ability to branch out into ever smaller niches and bringing your audience with you. Higher potential for overall traffic and hence earnings if the flagship blog becomes popular.

Disadvantages: Flagship blogs need a lot more personal energy because you’ll need to do a lot more marketing of your own material while interacting with the general community.

Picking the Right Niche Blogging Strategy

I’ve decided to go with a blend of both methods above and plan to build the niche blogs to to suit my personal skills.

For instance, I’m very familiar with most social websites/networks and I’ve decided to make sure that the overall style and content of each blog is palatable and attractive to social website audiences.

This also means that instead of just waiting for search traffic, I’m going to throw out a weekly linkbait article and promote it through social media websites and networks.

Seven blogs is a good initial number for me because I do eventually plan to outsource the content creation process by hiring writers or initiating a simple Adsense revenue share program.

This number of blogs is also manageable and allows me to easily measure their progress. Should I feel the need to create more niche blogs, I’ll probably develop them through the initial seven, which I plan to build into medium-sized blogs, each with their own loyal audience base.

Personally, I can blog very quickly on a wide variety of topics and updating these blogs daily should not take more than an hour if you know how to efficiently source for information.

I think its important to base your niche blogging strategy based on the following factors:
Time. How much time do you have everyday to blog?

Interest. Are you at least mildly interested in the topics you are writing about?

Personality. Do you like interacting with other bloggers and marketing your content? Or would you prefer to just focus on your content and let the search engines find you gradually?

Expertise. How well do you know your chosen topic? This determines how easily you can create content or interact within the community.

Long term growth. Are you patiently in it for the long haul or are you just interested in making a few quick bucks?

Budget. Will you be willing to invest money to grow your blogs or are intent on keeping costs as low as possible?

Seven Day Niche Blog Challenge: Day #1 Update

I’ve just started my first blog yesterday and it took around three hours to do up the entire blog. Most of the time was spent on doing research on the specific topics and checking out other similar websites.

I won’t reveal the domains for all the blogs now because I don’t want the niches to be overcrowded. Dosh Dosh has a fairly large audience and disclosing this would be detrimental to any actual ability to measure each niche’s profit potential.

I do however plan to reveal the revenue earnings and the topic at a later date so you’ll get a rough idea of the potential that each specific niche holds.

The next few posts will deal with how to choose an appropriate blog niche and domain/blog name as these are the main issues I had to deal with while setting up the first blog.

How Bloggers Make Money from Blogs

From ProBlogger

My Personal Income Streams

As an update to this post I’ve more recently written one on How I make Money Blogging which highlights the most profitable ways that I use blogs to generate income. I’ve also written extensively on how bloggers make money in ProBlogger the Book.
How do bloggers make money from blogs?

I’ve been reflecting this week about the amazing diversity of opportunities that are opening up for bloggers to make money from blogging.

I’ve long advised that bloggers seeking to make money from blogging spread their interests across multiple revenue streams so as not to put all their eggs in one basket.

The wonderful thing is that this is becoming easier and easier to do 2005 has seen many options opening up. I thought I’d take a look at some of the methods that bloggers are currently using to make money through blogs.

Income Streams for Bloggers - How to Make Money Blogging

Advertising Programs - Perhaps the most obvious changes in the past few months have been with the addition of a variety of viable advertising options for bloggers looking to make money from their blogs. The most common way bloggers seem to earn money online is via the contextual ad program from Google - Adsense. A more recent addition that many are using successfully are Chitika’s eMiniMalls and WidgetBucks, Text Link Ads.

Azoogle Ads, Intelli Txt, DoubleClick, Tribal Fusion, Adbrite, Clicksor, AdHearUs, Kanoodle, Pheedo, TextAds, Bidvertiser, Fastclick and Value Click (to name just some of the options) and there is a smorgasbord of options. Of course there is more to come with MSN Adcenter and YPN both in beta testing and with a variety of other advertising system currently in development (YPN is only available to US publishers).

Lastly there’s BlogAds - one of the first blog specific ad networks.

RSS Advertising - The past 12 months have seen some advances in RSS Advertising also. I’m yet to hear of any bloggers making big money blogging through it to this point - but as improvements are made to the ad programs exploring this I’m sure we’ll start to see examples of it being profitable.

Sponsorship - In addition to the array of advertising programs that are available to join there is a growing awareness in the business of the value and opportunity that exists for them to advertise directly on blogs. I’m hearing more and more examples of this and have been fortunately to have a couple of ad campaigns of my own in the past month - one with Adobe a couple of weeks ago and another just completed with Ricoh for a new digicam over at my Digital Camera Blog. These are not isolated cases - as I say I know of many blogs exploring sponsorship with advertisers at present and suspect we’ll see more of it in the year ahead. Sponsorship is also happening on a post by post basis with some bloggers being paid to write on certain topics by companies - either in one off or a regular fashion - and they are able to make big money from their blogs doing so.

Affiliate Programs - There are larger affiliate programs like Amazon, Linkshare, Clickbank and Commission Junction but also literally thousands of others from the large to the very small.

Digital Assets - Increasing numbers of bloggers have been developing other digital assets to support and add revenue streams to their blogs. By this I mean that I’m increasingly seeing e-books, courses and tele-seminars being run by bloggers. My recent foray into this with the first series of the six figure blogging course that Andy and I ran a few weeks ago and have just released the study version of. This type of activity will only increase in future - in fact this week I’ve seen numerous examples of bloggers running courses.

Blog Network Opportunities - with the rise in popularity of Blog Networks - bloggers are also being presented with more places to earn an income from their blogging - by writing for and with others. While it might be difficult to get a writing gig with one of the bigger networks - there are plenty who are always asking for new bloggers to join and who are willing to pay bloggers using a variety of payment models. While there are distinct advantages of blogging for yourself - blogging for an established network who will handle a lot of the set up/promotion/admin/SEO etc has it’s advantages also. More and more bloggers are combining writing for themselves on their own blogs with taking on blog network blogs as additional income streams.

Business Blog Writing Opportunities - as blogging has risen in it’s profile as a medium more and more businesses are starting blogs. Many of these companies have internal staff take on blogging duties - but an increasing number of them are hiring specialist bloggers to come on and run their blogs. I know of a number of bloggers who in the past month or two have been approached for such paid work. Check out Bloggers for Hire if you’re looking for this type of work.

Non Blogging Writing Opportunities - Also becoming more common are bloggers being hired to write in non blogging mediums. Manolo’s recent coup of a column in the Washington Post is just one example of this as bloggers are increasingly being approached to write for newspapers, magazines and other non blog websites. Along side this is the rise of bloggers as published book authors - this is to the extent that one blogger I spoke with this week complained to me that they were one of the few bloggers than they knew who didn’t have a book deal!

Donations - Tip Jars and donation buttons have been a part of blogging for years now but this last year saw a number of bloggers go full time after fund raising drives. Perhaps the most high profile of these was Jason Kottke of kottke.org who through the generosity of his readership was able to quit his job and become a full time blogger.

Flipping Blogs - Also more common in 2005 was the practice of ‘Blog Flipping’ - or selling of blogs. This has happened both on an individual blog level (I can think of about 20 blogs that sold this year) but also on a network level (the most obvious of these being the 8 figure sale of Weblogs Inc to AOL).

Merchandising - My recent attempt to sell ProBlogger.net T-shirts wasn’t a raging success, but it is an example of how an increasing number of bloggers are attempting to make a few extra dollars from their blogs by selling branded products through programs like Cafepress. While I didn’t have a lot of success with merchandising - quite a few larger blogs are seeing significant sales - especially blogs with a cult following. I’m not at liberty to discuss details - but I know of one largish blog which will see sales over $20,000 in merchandise for the calendar year of 2005.

Consulting and Speaking - While it has been popular for established consultants to add blogs to their businesses we’re also starting to see bloggers with no consulting background able to make money by charging readers for their time in consulting scenarios BECAUSE of the profile that their blogs have built them. Blogging has the ability to establish people as experts on niche topics and we all know the value of being perceived as an expert. I spoke to one blogger last month who charges himself out at over $200 an hour for speaking and consulting work - his area of expertise was something that he knew little about 18 months ago - but through his blog he’s become a leader in his field and a minor celebrity in his industry.

As time rolls on there are more and more ways that bloggers make money from their blogs opening up. Feel free to suggest your own ideas and experiences in comments below.

SHOW ME THE MONEY - PAULA MOONEY'S MAKING MONEY ON THE INTERNET LIST

THANKS PAULA

Show Me the Money - Paula Mooney's Making Money Online ListHats off to Paula Mooney and her new improved Internet cool dudes making money list where people who make money online reveal all ! It must have involved an enormous amount of work, but it is much appreciated by the bloggerati throughout cyberspace (I thought I had invented a word there for a minute but I just checked and 'bloggerati.com' has already been registered!)Paula's list has doubled in size!

There are now 120 people on it ranging from the top two, who both make money from domain names by the way,
1. Kevin Ham ($300 million - although not $300 million a year it must be said) for the inside info. about how Kevin Ham made $300 milion see here YouWannaBeADomainNameMillionaire? and
2. Frank Schilling ($20 million - again not annually) to the bottom 118. Fame Fire with $19 (well done for having the guts to admit it but it could prove to be good marketing ploy! (119. and 120. have not provided the info. yet).
To see Paula's complete list you need to go here PaulaMooney - my intention here is to look at one particular aspect which has been bothering me for a while as a blogger, namely WordPress or Blogger? As you can see from this blog I am using Blogger, because I'm a cheapskate and it's free. As I understand it you cannot put Adsense on the free version of WordPress (please someone correct me if I am wrong). But I have this nagging doubt that the 'real' professional bloggers use WordPress and that they do it for a reason. So I decided to carry out the very mundane task of checking out all the bloggers on Paula's list to see which ones use WordPress and which ones use Blogger. Simple huh? But hopefully educational!Firstly, of the 120 people on the list I have only counted those that appear to be bloggers (i.e. not the websites) - so that is 88 in total.[NB : Updated 25 June. For some reason I left off Frank Schilling, who is no. 2 on the list with $20m - made from domain names - but he also has a blog]

Holy moley - that took longer than I thought (several hours in fact) !
Conclusions ? There's an awful lot of creative talent out there !

And the score is ...... WordPress - 68 Blogger - 20 Typepad 1 (a big one but he makes his money from domain names not from blogging I believe)

So almost 3.5 : 1 in favour of WordPress, but it is worth bearing in mind that of those earning $50K or more, 14 are using Wordpress and only 3 are using Blogger.

I don't know enough to say why this might be. It could be just historical, the ones earning the most money may have been doing it longer and they started with WordPress. It will be interesting to see if the Blogger users start catching up (when Paula decides to draw up the new revised improved list!). The majority of Blogger users, but by no means all, are in the lower half of the table.
Please leave a comment if you have an explanation as to why most use Wordpress and not the free Blogger. Also why there is no-one in the list using Typepad?

I will be taking a closer look at the blogs again as there was a lot of information on all of them, and a lot of them are quite candid about publishing how much they make each month. I am particularly interested in those that are not so well-known, so if you would like me to review your blog, please drop me a line.

Have a nice day !
